Cardiac Catheterization Outpatient Instructions

You are scheduled to have your cardiac catheterization at DeKalb Medical Center. You need to report to CENTRAL REGISTRATION at least 3 hours before your procedure. Be sure and bring your insurance card.

Please do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before or the morning of your scheduled procedure. (You may continue to take your regular medications with only a sip of water unless your doctor instructs otherwise.) We suggest that you wear casual clothing, something that you will be able to get into easily after your procedure.

You need definite arrangements for transportation back home after your procedure. You will not be able to drive yourself home. Anyone accompanying you will be able to wait in your room during the procedure.

After registering at the information desk, you will be directed to the Laboratory and Radiology Department (if you have not yet had your pre-cath diagnostic studies done), and then to the nursing unit. There you will be assigned a regular hospital room and a nurse will start an IV line and get you ready for your procedure. Your procedure will last about 1 hour and you will be in the lab for about 1 ½ hours. After your procedure, you will go back to your room.

Your recovery period consists of about 3-6 hours of complete bed rest. You will not be able to get up during that time, but you will be able to have something to eat and drink. Your complete hospital stay will be 5-8 hours.

Please bring an over-night bag with any personal items you might need in the event the doctor would want you to spend the night.

If you are presently taking any blood thinners such as aspirin or coumadin please notify your doctor. If you have an allergy to a medication, x-ray dye, shellfish, or latex notify your doctor. If you have asthma or COPD notify your doctor.

If you can not make your scheduled appointment, will be late or have further questions, please call the Cardiovascular Laboratory at 404-501-5940.

Thank you.
